Grand Cayman’s underwater world is nothing short of breathtaking. With vibrant coral reefs, plunging walls, and crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, it’s no wonder divers travel from around the world to explore its depths.
But as any seasoned diver knows, the health of our oceans is increasingly under threat, be it from climate change and pollution or physical damage caused by human activity. At Red Sail Sports, we believe in protecting the marine environments that make our island so special. That’s why our Grand Cayman scuba diving trips have eco-friendly credentials at their core.
But we don’t expect you to simply take our word for it! Below, we have outlined how we turn our passion for reef conservation into positive action. Scroll down to find out more, and please just contact us if you have any questions.

Why Reef Conservation Matters to Divers in Grand Cayman and Worldwide
Coral reefs aren’t just beautiful — they’re essential. These fragile ecosystems cover around 1% of the ocean floor, yet they support approximately 25% of all marine life on Earth. They help protect coastlines from erosion and play a vital role in local tourism and economies. Here in our part of the Caribbean, the reefs are the beating heart of our community and just one of the reasons why Grand Cayman is the ideal destination for scuba divers.
But they’re also under pressure. Rising ocean temperatures, plastic pollution, and careless marine tourism can all contribute to reef degradation. Divers who love the ocean often feel a responsibility to protect it, and rightly so. Sustainable diving isn’t about giving anything up; it’s about ensuring that our beautiful kaleidoscope of sea life continues to thrive. This comes with the added benefit of allowing future generations to experience the same underwater magic we enjoy today.
For us, that starts with education, action, and choosing partners who take Grand Cayman reef conservation seriously.

Red Sail Sports’ Approach to Eco-Friendly Diving in Grand Cayman
Since our establishment in 1987, Red Sail Sports has been dedicated to providing unforgettable experiences on and under the water. It’s this passion that underpins our Grand Cayman scuba diving trips and boat tours! But our mission goes deeper than exploration — we’re also committed to preserving the marine habitats that make diving here so extraordinary. Here’s how we do it.
Starting with Awareness and Education
Every dive begins with a briefing, and ours always includes a message about the importance and fragility of our reefs and how we can take simple measures to protect them. We remind guests to practise excellent buoyancy control, never touch coral or marine life, and be mindful of their fins and gear. It may seem basic, but education is one of the most powerful tools in promoting sustainable diving in Grand Cayman.
We also encourage guests to bring reusable water bottles and avoid single-use plastics. It’s small steps like this that can go a long way to protecting the underwater wonders in the Cayman Islands.

Supporting Grand Cayman Conservation Projects
We don’t just talk about protecting reefs, we get involved. Red Sail Sports regularly supports and participates in underwater clean-ups, partnering with local organisations like Plastic Free Cayman and the Department of Environment (DoE). Whether it’s providing boats and dive staff for debris removals or contributing resources for community events, we believe collaboration is key to keeping our reefs healthy.
One memorable example is the reef restoration effort following an anchor drag incident near George Town harbour in December 2015. When a cruise ship damaged a large section of coral, Red Sail Sports (along with other members of the local dive community) immediately stepped in to assist. Our dive teams worked alongside DoE scientists and other local divers to remove rubble, clean and stabilise coral fragments, and help rebuild the reef structure.

Leading by Example in the Dive Industry
As one of Grand Cayman’s largest watersports operators, we know we have a responsibility to lead with integrity. That means following and promoting best practices across the board. We actively discourage the use of reef-harming sunscreens, advocate for minimal-impact diving throughout the island’s dive community, and much more.
By working together with fellow operators, marine experts, and government agencies, we hope to inspire long-term change, both locally and beyond. Discover even more about Red Sail Sports on our About Us page.

How You Can Dive Sustainably in Grand Cayman
If you’re keen to protect the Grand Cayman reefs you explore, here are a few simple ways to dive more responsibly:
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or cover up with UV-protective clothing to avoid chemical damage to coral.
- Bring a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste.
- Fine-tune your buoyancy control to avoid accidental contact with the reef.
- Don’t touch, feed or chase marine life — observe respectfully.
- Choose dive operators who support Grand Cayman reef conservation, like Red Sail Sports.
