The History of the USS Kittiwake

Before she became part of Grand Cayman’s underwater landscape, the USS Kittiwake had a long and distinguished life. Launched in 1946, this submarine rescue vessel served the United States Navy for nearly five decades, playing key roles in submarine support and search and recovery missions in global waters.

After her decommissioning in 1994, the ship remained in reserve until the Cayman Islands Government secured her transfer with the intent to create a spectacular artificial reef and dive site. In January 2011, the Kittiwake was deliberately sunk off the coast of Grand Cayman and has since become one of the island’s most iconic dive attractions. The Kittiwake Dive Site: Location and Conditions

The Kittiwake lies just off the northern end of Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman’s west side, making it easily accessible for day trips from many of the island’s resorts and dive operators, including Red Sail Sports.

Resting upright on a sandy bottom, the 251-foot wreck’s highest points are only about 15 feet below the surface, while its deepest sections reach around 65 feet. These shallow depths, crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and excellent year-round visibility make the site suitable for a wide range of certified divers, as well as snorkelers. In fact, if you want to experience this wreck without diving, you can join our USS Kittiwake and Reef Snorkeling Tour!

Because of its accessibility and dramatic structure, the Kittiwake has become one of the most photographed and visited dive sites in the Cayman Islands. The dive typically begins with a descent along the superstructure before you enjoy the freedom to explore its many nooks and crannies with your dive buddy or guide.

What You’ll See Diving at The Kittiwake: Marine Life and Underwater Features

Today, the Kittiwake is a vibrant ecosystem. As the wreck has aged, it has become encrusted with corals and sponges, creating a habitat for an astonishing variety of marine life. Expect to encounter curious sea turtles, schools of colorful tropical fish weaving in and out of the wreck, and occasional sightings of stingrays and other fascinating creatures.

The actual wreck itself is largely intact, with multiple decks for divers to discover. Dive through the control room, swim past propellers, or snap a photo with the water cannon. As you explore, you can feel the past come to life! If you’re interested in even more wreck dives, read our Guide to Shipwreck Dives in the Cayman Islands.
