Grand Cayman may be best known for its famous beaches, but the island is in fact abounding with fascinating wildlife. Everyone from kids to nature lovers will find themselves captivated by the sheer diversity of Grand Cayman’s wildlife, some of which can be found nowhere else on earth!
Here at Red Sail Sports, we encounter some of the island’s wildlife as part of our Grand Cayman Boat Tours. But if you want to discover natural beauty on both land and sea, we’ve created this guide to Grand Cayman’s wildlife highlights, including its famous blue iguana, parrots, and stingrays. Keep reading for insights into the island’s iconic creatures and how to see them. If you have any questions about our tours in the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Meet the Stingrays of Stingray City
One of Grand Cayman’s most popular and unique wildlife encounters takes place in the shallow waters of Stingray City, a sandbar located in the North Sound. Here, southern stingrays gather naturally, having previously been fed here by fishermen and growing accustomed to the presence of people. Because of this, visitors have the rare opportunity to not only swim with these stingrays, but also hold them or plant a gentle kiss on them for good luck!
Of course, many people may have concerns about the safety of interacting with these stingrays. That’s why we address this in more detail with our blog about whether the stingrays of Stingray City can sting you. (The short is yes, they can sting, but the likelihood is very slim!) It’s also why Stingray City is generally only accessible on a guided tour with professionals. We offer a range of Stingray City Grand Cayman Tours, where we’ll guide you through the best way of handling the stingrays, for your safety and theirs!

Encounter Cayman Parrots at the Cayman Parrot Sanctuary
The Cayman Parrot is the national bird of the Cayman Islands and one of the island’s most beautiful, and threatened, residents. Easily recognisable by their vibrant green feathers, blue and red markings, and by their loud squawks, these birds have become endangered by habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade.
While progress in their conservation has been made, it’s still vital to admire these stunning birds in a safe environment. You may be lucky enough to spot them, or hear them first, while wandering the forests of Grand Cayman. But for a guaranteed encounter, you can see them at the Cayman Parrot Sanctuary on the East End. Here, injured parrots are taken in to be rehabilitated and hopefully released back into the wild. Visiting here will offer a deeper appreciation of Cayman’s birdlife, and also allow you to learn more about the protection of these special birds.

Spot Blue Iguanas at the Botanic Park
No wildlife experience in Grand Cayman is complete without seeing the famous Grand Cayman blue iguana. Once critically endangered and on the brink of extinction, this remarkable reptile has made an inspiring comeback thanks to ongoing conservation work on the island.
The best place to see blue iguanas is at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, where they are bred and free to roam in a protected habitat. You can join a guided tour to learn more about their conservation, but you may happen upon one while walking through the park, either basking near the trails or resting beneath the trees.
The botanic park is also located just a 15-minute drive from our Rum Point Club, where you can join one of our Stingray City tours for a full day of wildlife encounters! To learn more about what to do in the area, read our Guide to Rum Point.

See the Finches and Woodpeckers of the Mastic Trail
For birdwatchers, the Mastic Trail offers one of the most immersive wildlife experiences on the island. This historic trail winds through pristine old-growth forest, which provides a haven for some of Grand Cayman’s rarest bird species.
Here, you may spot the Grand Cayman Bullfinch, a small but distinctive bird found only on the island, as well as the West Indian Woodpecker, another endemic bird known for its striking markings and seen working on tree trunks. Early mornings are the best time to visit, when the forest is alive with activity and bird song. Better yet, hiking the Mastic Trail is one of the Best Free Things to Do in Grand Cayman!

Swim with Sea Turtles at Spotts Beach
Along the island’s southern coast, Spotts Beach is a favourite location for spotting green sea turtles in the wild. Just offshore, these gentle marine reptiles can often be seen grazing on seagrass in shallow waters.
Snorkelling at Spotts Beach offers an incredible opportunity to observe turtles in their natural habitat, without the need for a boat trip, but we encourage visitors to keep a respectful distance and allow the turtles to move freely. Calm mornings usually provide the best visibility and the most rewarding encounters! Interested in what else you may see beneath the waves?
