There are few experiences in the Caribbean quite like stepping off a catamaran into waist-deep, crystal-clear water and finding yourself surrounded by graceful southern stingrays. Stingray City is one of Grand Cayman’s most iconic attractions, and arriving by catamaran makes it all the more memorable.
At Red Sail Sports, we’ve taken thousands of guests to this world-famous sandbar on our Stingray City Grand Cayman Tours. If you’re planning your visit, here’s how to make the most of your time on the water — from what to bring to how to interact confidently and respectfully with the rays.

Book a Guided Catamaran Excursion to Stingray City
Not all Stingray City tours are created equal. Some focus purely on getting you to the sandbar as quickly as possible. A guided catamaran tour, on the other hand, is built around the full experience.
With Red Sail Sports’ Stingray City Sandbar and Snorkeling Excursions, you travel aboard a spacious, stable catamaran with shaded seating, onboard facilities, and a professional crew who manage the tour from start to finish. Many of our tours also include a stop at a nearby reef, where you’ll get to put on a snorkeling mask and explore the underwater world further.
Our catamarans also make a difference. The ride across the North Sound is smooth and comfortable, and there’s space to relax before and after your time in the water. Choosing an established operator like Red Sail Sports also ensures that equipment is properly maintained and safety standards are consistently followed.

Know What to Expect at the Stingray City Sandbar
Stingray City is a shallow sandbar in the North Sound where wild southern stingrays gather. The water is typically waist-deep, and guests enter directly from the boat using stairs or ladders.
Once anchored, your crew will explain how the interaction works. You’ll have time in the water to stand comfortably on the sandy bottom while stingrays glide around you. Crew members are in the water throughout the experience, guiding interactions and ensuring guests are comfortable.
Most tours allow approximately 30 to 45 minutes at the sandbar, depending on conditions. That’s enough time for interaction, photos, and getting comfortable in the environment without feeling rushed.
Choosing When to Visit Stingray City
Stingray City is popular year-round, so when you book your tour can influence your experience. If you’re visiting during peak season or on a cruise ship day, booking an earlier or later departure can help you avoid the busiest periods. Morning tours often offer calmer sea conditions and, in many cases, fewer boats at the sandbar.
With our Morning Stingray City Tour, you’ll often find that you are the first boat to arrive, allowing you to experience the sandbar all to yourself! For an even more remarkable experience, our Stingrays and Sunsets in Grand Cayman excursion will see you swimming with the rays at golden hour, long after all the tour boats have left.
It’s also smart to schedule your Stingray City tour earlier in your trip, rather than on your final day. Weather in the Caribbean can shift, and giving yourself flexibility ensures you won’t miss out if conditions require rescheduling.

Follow Guidance on How to Interact with the Stingrays
The stingrays at Stingray City are accustomed to human interaction, but they are still wild animals. Before entering the water, you’ll receive instructions on how to encounter them safely. Guests are advised to shuffle their feet along the sand rather than take large steps. This prevents accidentally stepping on a stingray resting on the bottom.
You’ll also be shown how to position your hands and how to hold a stingray properly. Grabbing, chasing, or attempting to control the animals is never allowed. Respectful interaction ensures both guest safety and animal well-being.

What to Bring on Your Stingray City Tour
For your tour, we recommend wearing comfortable swimwear and consider a rash guard or swim shirt for sun protection. Apply reef-safe sunscreen before boarding so it has time to absorb. Sunglasses with a strap and a hat are useful during the sail, as well as a change of clothes after your time in the water.
Red Sail Sports provides snorkel gear for a reef stop, but you’ll need to bring your own towel. We also recommend bringing some cash or a card if you want to purchase drinks from our onboard bar!
