Has it been a few years since you last went scuba diving? Getting back in the water after a break can feel a little daunting. You might remember how much you enjoyed diving, but feel less confident about your equipment, buoyancy, or some of the skills you learnt when you were first certified.
The good news is that you don’t have to start from scratch. A scuba refresher helps certified divers brush up on their knowledge, practise essential skills, and regain confidence before returning to regular diving.
At Red Sail Sports, we offer two refresher options in Grand Cayman, depending on how long it has been since your last dive. Let’s take a closer look at both.

Is it Safe to Go Scuba Diving After a Long Break?
Scuba diving involves skills and procedures that can become less familiar when you don’t use them for a while. Equipment and technology also change over time, so it’s worth making sure you are comfortable with the gear your dive operator uses.
That’s why taking a refresher before scuba diving after a long break is a sensible step. Rather than going straight onto a dive and hoping everything comes back to you, you can review important procedures, practise your skills with an instructor, and ease yourself back into the water.
At Red Sail Sports, our refresher policy is straightforward:
- If your last dive was more than a year ago, we recommend taking a PADI Dive Refresher Course.
- If it was two to five years ago, you must take a PADI Dive Refresher Course as a requirement.
- If you haven’t dived for six years or more, you will need to complete the PADI Reactivate Scuba Refresher Course before diving with us.
- If it has been more than 10 years, we ask you to contact our team to discuss further training.

What Does a Scuba Diving Refresher Course Involve?
A refresher is about more than remembering how to manage your equipment. It allows you to review the fundamentals and practise them in the water before joining a normal dive.
Our PADI Dive Refresher Course starts with basic dive theory, including safety procedures, buoyancy control, and emergency situations. You will also familiarise yourself with the equipment and dive computer you will use before heading into the pool to practise skills such as mask clearing and out-of-air procedures.
The afternoon finishes with a shallow reef dive accompanied by one of our experienced instructors. This gives you the chance to put those skills into practice and get comfortable underwater again.
Once you have successfully completed the course, you can join Red Sail Sports on a range of other Grand Cayman dives, including our West Wall, North Wall and Kittiwake wreck dives.

What If You Haven’t Been Diving for Six Years or More?
For a longer break, Red Sail Sports offers the PADI Reactivate Scuba Refresher Course. This is a one-day course designed to refresh both your knowledge and practical skills before you return to diving.
The course covers safe diving practices, dive planning, problem management, breathing air at depth, and the basic use and planning of dive computers and dive tables. You will then complete a confined-water skills session in the pool with your instructor before heading out on an afternoon boat for a shallow one-tank dive.
If you want to complete the theory before arriving in Grand Cayman, you can do so through PADI eLearning. Keep in mind that you must complete the online theory before starting the in-person work with us.

How Can You Prepare for Returning to Scuba Diving?
Before booking a dive, think about when you last went underwater and what type of diving you were doing at the time. Your certification card is also important, as Red Sail Sports requires certified divers to provide proof of certification.
It’s also important to consider your current health. If yours has changed since you were certified and you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to dive, Red Sail Sports advises obtaining medical clearance from your physician. Participants must complete a medical form when enrolling in refresher courses.
Most importantly, be honest about your experience. If you feel rusty, tell your instructor. The purpose of a scuba diving refresher course is to help you feel comfortable and prepared, not to test how much you can remember.

How Do You Regain Confidence When Returning to Scuba Diving?
Confidence comes from getting back into the water and taking things at a sensible pace. You may find that some skills come back almost immediately, while others need a little more practice.
There’s no need to compare yourself with someone who has been diving regularly. Concentrate on the basics, listen to your instructor, and give yourself time to settle back into the underwater environment.
At Red Sail Sports, our refresher courses are specifically designed to ease you back into diving in a controlled, supervised environment. Ultimately, we just want to help you get back to doing what you love.
We also recommend that divers who have not been underwater within the last year make their first excursion a shallow one-tank dive before tackling the West Wall or North Wall.

What Should You Do After Your Refresher?
Once you have completed your refresher and feel comfortable in the water again, you can start looking at the diving you want to experience. And you’re spoilt for choice, as Grand Cayman is the ideal destination for scuba divers!
Our island is home to an incredible variety of dive sites, from shallow coral reefs and wrecks to dramatic wall dives. Our Ultimate Guide to Diving in the Cayman Islands is a useful place to start if you want to explore the different areas and experiences available.
The important thing is not to rush. Choose a dive that matches your current confidence and experience, and build from there. Before long, the feeling of being underwater can start to feel familiar again.
