One of the most famous experiences in Grand Cayman, Stingray City is a shallow sandbar where friendly southern stingrays gather. We have written another detailed guide dedicated solely to this iconic destination — check out our Ultimate Guide to Stingray City in Grand Cayman when you have finished here.
The water here is only waist-deep, so it’s not exclusively a snorkelling spot. In fact, you only need to wade and swim in the crystal-clear water to have an amazing time interacting with these graceful creatures.
But if you’re new to snorkelling and want to find your feet in safe and easy surroundings, Stingray City is a great place to start. And on our Stingray Sandbar and Reef – Grand Cayman Stingray City Excursion, your next snorkelling experience comes immediately after! We hop back on our luxury catamaran and sail over to the Coral Gardens…
Located near Stingray City and nestled inside the North Sound, Coral Gardens is a shallow reef teeming with marine life. Grand Cayman’s Barrier Reef provides a protective barrier between the North Sound and the open Caribbean Sea, so the shallow water here (around 10ft deep) is perfect for snorkellers of all experiences.
And once you’re in the water, you can expect to see colourful coral formations and a dazzling array of marine species, including parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, and many more.
For a deeper snorkelling experience, Grand Cayman’s Barrier Reef is a must-visit. This vibrant ecosystem is accessible only by boat and offers breathtaking coral formations and marine biodiversity. Just some of the marine life you can find here is tropical fish, turtles, lobsters, eels, and stingrays.
While the Coral Gardens is a specific site around 200 yards west of the Stingray City Sandbar, the Barrier Reef covers a much larger area, running along Grand Cayman’s north coast. It also extends to the east and south coasts, but our focus is on the outstanding snorkelling found where the North Sound meets the Caribbean Sea.
Because the Barrier Reef on the north coast is too far offshore to reach without a boat, many visitors don’t make it here to encounter the thriving reef and its kaleidoscopic marine life. At Red Sail Sports, we offer private snorkelling tours in Grand Cayman thanks to our exclusive luxury boat charters. If you want to experience the Barrier Reef on a bespoke outing, please just get in touch to discuss the possibilities.
These neighbouring snorkel sites are known for their intricate network of caves, tunnels, and overhangs, making them a joy to explore. The conditions here attract 6-foot-long tarpon, grouper, and other large fish, and in the summer, schools of shimmering silversides join in the fun, whizzing in and out of the caves and through the tunnels.
And best of all, you can easily access Eden Rock from the shore. Located on the George Town waterfront, you can enter the water using the ladder provided — then simply follow the mooring balls.
For those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Cemetery Beach, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, offers an easily accessible reef with thriving coral and schools of fish. The reef starts just a short swim from shore (around 60 yards) and is a great option for independent snorkellers. However, while you can swim to the reef here, we only recommend it for strong swimmers and experienced snorkellers.
This part of Seven Mile Beach is named after a cemetery located just off the sand. But while the name may not inspire much excitement, don’t be fooled! This is one of Grand Cayman’s most captivating snorkel spots, with a mesmerising array of fish species and other marine life.
If you’re planning on staying in the Seven Mile Beach area, we think you’ll love reading our Ultimate Guide to Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman too!
Also known as Smith Barcadere, this is one of Grand Cayman’s most picturesque snorkelling spots. Smith Cove has easy shore access, vibrant coral formations, a variety of marine species (including angelfish and butterflyfish), and calm waters. The latter, in particular, makes Smith Cove an ideal spot for beginner snorkellers to explore, and it’s just one of the reasons why this location made it into our Family-Friendly Guide to Grand Cayman’s Best Beaches.
For our last two picks for the best places to snorkel in Grand Cayman, we’re heading to the North Side. Let’s start with Starfish Point! Located five-minutes from Rum Point, Starfish Point is one of the most unique snorkeling spots our island has to offer. And as you may have already guessed from its name, it’s because the water here is home to vivid red and orange starfish!
You will see some starfish in the shallow waters without the need for snorkelling, but most of the resident population live on the seagrass in the deeper drop-off a short distance from the beach — so snorkel out a little further to see even more of these stars of the ocean!
Sound like your kind of experience? Consider our North Sound Eco-Safari! It includes a trip to Starfish Point as well as Stingray City and snorkelling at a coral reef.
Located on the island’s north side, Rum Point has numerous snorkelling spots that are fun to explore. Many beginners enjoy snorkelling around Rum Point Dock as a diverse range of fish tend to gather around there. But Rum Point Beach and the neighbouring Cayman Kai are two more fantastic locations for relaxed snorkelling. The water is shallow, and a current moves gently from Cayman Kai toward Rum Point, allowing snorkellers to drift from one to the other while admiring the soft corals and many fish species along the way.
It’s important to be aware of the boat channel here and to snorkel with a dive flag for visibility.
And when you’ve worked up an appetite and a thirst, head to Rum Point Club for a range of delicious local and international dishes and refreshing cocktails in a laid-back, beachside atmosphere.
Will you be heading to our island’s east coast too? Read all about our picks for the six best snorkelling spots in East End, Grand Cayman.
Of the snorkel sites listed above, families and beginner snorkellers will appreciate the calm waters at Starfish Point, Rum Point, and Smith Cove. These areas offer shallow, sheltered waters with plenty to see just below the surface.
Red Sail Sports also provides guided, fun-filled boat excursions featuring visits to some of Grand Cayman’s best snorkel sites. We have covered these below in the section titled The Best Snorkelling Boat Excursions in Grand Cayman.
Everyone has their own idea of the perfect snorkelling experience, but two things that unite them all are optimal weather conditions and outstanding visibility. With this in mind, the best time to snorkel in Grand Cayman is between November and April, our island’s dry season.
If you’re looking for more information about what to expect from our island’s weather, be sure to read our blog What Time of Year is it Best to Visit Grand Cayman?
While snorkelling is possible year-round, the summer months (May to October) bring occasional rain showers, tropical storms, and hurricanes to the Caribbean. Even when stronger storms pass at a safe distance, they can make water choppier and currents stronger, all while reducing visibility. Broadly speaking, storm season lasts from June to November, with the peak of hurricane season occurring between August and October.
These rough conditions may make some snorkel sites inaccessible. However, there are still stretches of calm, dry days throughout the summer, so there is plenty of amazing snorkelling to be enjoyed!
As our blog 10 Aquatic Animals You’ll Encounter in Grand Cayman shows, snorkellers looking for marine life encounters are in for a treat! But before you move on to that essential reading when you have finished this Ultimate Guide to Snorkelling in Grand Cayman, let’s look at some of the standout species you might see:
The discussion about visibility when snorkelling in Grand Cayman is short — put simply, it’s exceptional. Our island has no rivers running off into the sea, depositing silt and other debris along the way. As a result, Grand Cayman offers some of the best water visibility in the Caribbean, often exceeding 100 feet (30 metres).
When you also factor in the calmness of the water and the lack of strong currents at many snorkelling spots, you can enjoy startlingly clear views of the vibrant marine life below.
With this breathtaking visibility, there’s so much to see and experience. Check out our blog What is There to See When Snorkelling in the Cayman Islands? to find out more.
