Where Is the North Wall in Grand Cayman?

The North Wall runs along the northern coastline of Grand Cayman, stretching from West Bay to Rum Point. Because the north side of the island is more exposed to weather and wind conditions, access to the North Wall is weather-dependent and is usually dived in the summer. On calm days, the reward is exceptional diving that many consider the best in the Cayman Islands!

Divers typically reach the North Wall by boat, departing from marinas along the west side of the island. Red Sail Sports offers two different departure points for our 2-Tank North Wall Dive in Grand Cayman, either from the Safehaven Marina or the Rum Point dock.

What Makes Grand Cayman’s North Wall So Special?

Characterised by its sheer drop-offs and dramatic topography, the North Wall is an underwater labyrinth of deep crevices, pinnacles, swim-throughs, and spectacular corals. With its excellent visibility, abundant marine life, and diverse sites, diving the North Wall can feel utterly cinematic!

Marine Life You Can See on the North Wall

The North Wall is famous for encounters with pelagic species, thanks to its proximity to deep water. Turtles are commonly spotted gliding along the wall, while eagle rays are frequent visitors, particularly in the winter months.

Reef sharks, including Caribbean reef sharks, patrol the deeper sections — a truly thrilling, but safe encounter. Learn more about these creatures with our Ultimate Guide to Shark Species in Grand Cayman.

Closer to the reef, vibrant sponges, black coral, and hard corals provide shelter for smaller creatures such as moray eels and reef fish. The wall’s vertical structure creates countless microhabitats, making every dive unique!

What Is a Dive Like on the North Wall?

The North Wall is best suited to intermediate or advanced divers who are comfortable with deeper profiles. When you join our 2-Tank North Wall Dive in Grand Cayman, you’re signing up for an exhilarating morning including two dives. Departing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the dive lasts four hours between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm.

The first dive is a guided wall dive, reaching a maximum depth of approximately 100 feet. Dive time is typically up to 45 minutes on air or up to 55 minutes for divers using Nitrox, depending on individual profiles and conditions.

We then surface for one hour to relax and rehydrate. The second dive is shallower and more relaxed, often taking place along the top of the wall or on a nearby reef site. This is a buddy dive with a partner or guide, reaching depths of 50 to 60 feet. With the opportunity to admire huge coral formations and sport charismatic marine life, it’s a bucket list tour for divers!
