A Guide to Rum Point, Cayman Islands

Is Rum Point a must-visit destination on your upcoming Cayman Islands holiday? First, let us say you’ve made an excellent decision! Rum Point is the very definition of a peaceful, relaxed Caribbean beach experience, complete with azure ocean waters, white sand, and cabanas between palm trees!

Compared to busier places on the west coast of Grand Cayman, like Seven Mile Beach and George Town, Rum Point is off the beaten track. As such, you may not be able to find the kind of reliable information you want to read online.

That’s why we’ve written this Guide to Rum Point! Among our incredible range of Grand Cayman activities and tours, we provide boat excursions from Rum Point. The Rum Point Club is also part of the Red Sail Sports family, so it’s fair to say that we know this part of paradise inside out!

So if you’re planning a trip to Rum Point, scroll down and read our guide for all the information you need to know. And if any questions come to mind as you read, please feel free to get in touch!

Where is Rum Point?

You can find Rum Point on Grand Cayman’s north coast, in the North Side district. It sits on the eastern side of the mouth of the North Sound, where it converges with the Caribbean Sea. As such, it is directly across the water from Barker’s National Park on the west side of the Sound.

And if you’re wondering where the name Rum Point came from, it’s in honour of the rum barrels that washed ashore here from a floundering ship.

How to Get to Rum Point?

Navigating your way to Rum Point is a breeze! It’s less than an hour’s drive from the Seven Mile Beach area and around 45 minutes from George Town. The drive is a wonderful experience in itself as it passes some beautiful scenic stretches along the coast and through the heart of our island. There you will find local homes, old churches, and beautiful quiet beaches which will give you the real “island life” feel.

Alternatively, you can hop on one of our catamarans and sail across the stunning North Sound to reach Rum Point.

Departing from Safehaven Marina, our Rum Point Dinner Ferry allows you to enjoy happy hour aboard one of our luxury vessels before disembarking in Rum Point for a delicious dinner buffet.

If you’re looking for a little more adventure in the daytime, check out our Rum Point Beach Adventure Sail! This excursion also departs from Safehaven Marina and includes a stop at the world-famous Stingray City and a stop at Rum Point for lunch.

And with a whole host of fun activities to enjoy, from snorkelling and kayak rentals to beach volleyball and stand-up paddleboarding, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

And don’t forget the sunsets! Cayman sunsets are famous for their beauty, and watching the vivid colours unfold in Rum Point is an experience you will cherish. But you can elevate it to even higher levels by joining a sunset sailing trip from Rum Point, taking in the captivating spectacle from a luxury catamaran out at sea.

It’s no surprise that we included Rum Point Beach as one of our picks for the best beaches in Grand Cayman.

Activities in Rum Point: Finding Fun and Relaxation

We briefly touched on some of the activities you can enjoy in Rum Point above, but there’s so much more to see and do here! One of the most popular things to do in Rum Point is to sail the short distance to the aquatic wonderland of Stingray City.

Both our Stingray City Sandbar Sail and Stingray City Trip depart from Rum Point Dock. This is the closest departure point for all our boat tours to Stingray City, making it ideal for individuals and families with young children looking to keep sailing times as short as possible.

When you arrive, you step off the boat into the shallow, crystal-clear ocean water, where the friendly resident southern stingrays are waiting for you! Playing, petting, and perhaps even kissing (if you’re brave!) these majestic animals in their natural habitat is a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Read our Visitor’s Guide to Grand Cayman’s Stingray City to find out more about this remarkable place.

Near the end of Water Cay Road, you can also find Starfish Point. As you may have already guessed, the calm, shallow water here is home to several large red starfish. If you run out of time to visit Starfish Point on your Rum Point visit, it’s the third and final stop on our North Sound Eco Safari.

And while there are thrilling jet ski rentals for those looking to feel an adrenaline rush too, one of the most popular activities in Rum Point is simply lazing in a beach chair sipping a mudslide overlooking the beautiful beach scenery. Finding a moment for pure relaxation isn’t always easy these days, but Rum Point is the ideal place to disconnect and put life on pause.
