Where in Grand Cayman are North Side and West Bay?
Grand Cayman’s geography creates distinct vibes across its districts. West Bay, as you may already have guessed, is located on the island’s northwest tip, which also happens to be on the west coast. The iconic Seven Mile Beach dominates this part of Grand Cayman and it stretches from West Bay down into the George Town district. Of course, this latter district is also home to George Town the city, the capital of the Cayman Islands. Unsurprisingly, then, the west coast of our island is the liveliest. It blends convenience, excitement, and family-friendly attractions.
On the opposite side of the North Sound lies North Side, a tranquil haven stretching across the north-central coast. Far removed from the busier spots, it’s perfect for immersing yourself in nature and soaking up a more traditional Caymanian atmosphere.
While there’s no “best” place to stay, the right choice depends on what you value in a holiday. Are you looking for vibrant activities and buzzing energy? Or do you dream of quiet beaches and serene landscapes?

Reasons to Stay in North Side, Grand Cayman
For travellers looking to escape the crowds, the serene North Side may make a better fit. But what are the main reasons why you should skip the lively energy of the west coast in favour of the North?
Grand Cayman’s North Side is Quiet and Secluded
The North Side feels like a world away from the bustling beaches of Seven Mile. Here, you’ll find quiet stretches of sand where you can relax and unwind in peace. It’s perfect for honeymooners or anyone seeking solitude. But you’re also never too far from the action either. We run exciting excursions from Rum Point, Grand Cayman, and the popular Stingray City Sail from Rum Point.
Our sister company, Tortuga Divers, is just a short drive away in the East End, offering divers the chance to explore the underwater world off Grand Cayman’s east coast. This area is known for being less busy and more “untouched,” providing a serene and unique diving experience!
It’s Close to Numerous Natural Wonders
Nature lovers will appreciate the abundance of natural wonders on the North Side. Visit Rum Point, a favourite for its calm, turquoise waters and white sand, or head to Starfish Point, where vibrant sea stars dot the shallow waters. The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is another gem, offering colourful blooms and a chance to spot the rare Blue Iguana, while the Cayman Crystal Caves is a must-see sight below the surface.
North Side Has an Authentic Caymanian Feel
North Side retains a traditional vibe with its small communities and local eateries, including the famous Rum Point Club. You’ll experience a side of Grand Cayman that’s slower-paced and deeply rooted in island culture.

Reasons Why West Bay or North Side May Not Be For You
While both districts have their charm, they may not suit every traveller. Here are some of the reasons why West Bay or North Side might not be your perfect home away from home after all.
West Bay
West Bay’s popularity comes with a downside: crowds. Areas close to Seven Mile Beach can feel busy, especially during peak travel seasons. If you’re seeking privacy and seclusion, this might not be the ideal choice. Additionally, accommodations and dining here often come at a premium.
North Side
The North Side’s remoteness has its trade-offs. It’s a longer drive to the airport in George Town. This distance also makes it all but impossible for cruise passengers to visit during fleeting stays. There are fewer restaurants, shops, and amenities, and the nightlife is virtually non-existent compared with the west coast.
West Bay and North Side are fun and fascinating places to visit, and our evening activities in Grand Cayman make it easy to explore both. Some of these excursions, such as the Ferry to Rum Point Backyard BBQ, depart from Safehaven Marina in the Seven Mile Beach area and sail across the gorgeous North Sound to Rum Point Dock on the North Side.
So, North Side or West Bay for a Grand Cayman Vacation?
Your choice ultimately depends on what you want from your Grand Cayman adventure.
- Choose the North Side if you prioritise tranquillity, peace, and natural beauty. This district is perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed and authentic Caribbean getaway.
- Opt for West Bay if you value convenience, a bustling atmosphere, and proximity to attractions. It’s an excellent option for families, first-time visitors, or anyone wanting easy access to the island’s highlights.
